Saint-Petersburg Orchid Society (SPOS) was founded in 2006 by a group of people who share a fascination with orchids. SPOS is a non-profit organization.

The Society has monthly meetings in The Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in the Herbarium ; except during the summer .

At each meeting we have lectures and presentations on an orchid subject made by members, or guest speakers. We talk about the Society news, show our plants, ask the questions that have been bothering us. We are always pleased to welcome orchid enthusiasts, from the beginners to the experienced grower. So please come to one of our monthly meetings . Attendance at meetings is free.

Saint-Petersburg Orchid Society, apart from indoor Orchid cultivation, regards the propaganda of careful attitude to our native Orchids as one of its major activities.

During the meetings of our Society, here on the website, people can gain an intimate knowledge of our Orchids and learn how to distinguish between species and how to take care of them.

Together with Komarov Botanical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences, we are carrying out the investigations of our native Orchids. Our main task is to make a thorough investigation of their localities and mapping, which would help us to reveal the dynamics (changes in number). Apart from studies of scientific herbarium collections and scientific literature, we collect information on Orchid localities during the expeditions and from people. Our society also takes part in the organization of expeditions for checking old localities.

Our activities in the field of conservation of wild Orchids of North-West European Russia are supported by Rufford Small Grants Foundation

Checking these places is one of the most important tasks of the summer meetings that helps to conserve the native orchids in Russia .

SPOS cooperates with a journal, С The Orchid Planet', the only magazine about orchids and tropical plants in Russian.

Do join us! We are always pleased to welcome new members .

Meetings are held on the third Saturday of the month (as usual).

Meetings start at 1:00 pm .
